The Cisco QDD-2x100-LR4-S is a high-performance and high-density optical transceiver module based on QSFP-DD packaging.
Its core function is to split a QSFP-DD physical port on a device (such as a switch or router) into two independent 100Gbps Ethernet ports and use single-mode fiber for long-distance (10 kilometers) transmission.
The key product description points are as follows:
1. Packaging form:
QSFP-DD (Quad Small Form-Factor Pluggable Double Density): This is the eighth-generation high-speed plug-in module packaging standard.
It is similar in shape to QSFP28 but slightly longer and thicker, providing 8-channel electrical interfaces. It is backward compatible with QSFP28/QSFP+,
ports (physically inserted in a compatible cage, but the electrical interface requires device support).
2. Port configuration and rate:
2x100G: This is the core feature of this module. It combines the 8 electrical channels of the QSFP-DD port (typically 25Gbps NRZ or 50Gbps PAM4) into two independent 100Gbps Ethernet links.
Each 100G link logically appears as an independent 100 Gigabit Ethernet (100GE) port at the host end. Supported protocols: 100GBASE-LR4
3. Transmission distance and fiber type:
LR4 (Long Reach 4): Indicates using single-mode fiber (SMF) for transmission.
10KM: The maximum transmission distance is 10 kilometers. This is the standard 100GBASE-LR4 transmission distance.
4. Wavelength technology:
Each independent 100G link uses CWDM (Coarse Wavelength Division Multiplexing) technology.
Each 100G link internally uses 4 different wavelengths (usually in the range of 1271nm, 1291nm, 1311nm, 1331nm or nearby, in accordance with IEEE 100GBASE-LR4 standards),
each wavelength carrying a data rate of 25Gbps, and through wavelength division multiplexing is transmitted on a pair of fibers to achieve 100Gbps per link. Therefore,
the entire module requires 2 pairs of fibers(a total of 4 fiber cores) to support two independent 100G links:
Link 1: Uses wavelengths λ1, λ2, λ3, λ4 on the Tx1/Rx1 fiber pair.
Link 2: Uses wavelengths λ5, λ6, λ7, λ8 on the Tx2/Rx2 fiber pair. (Note: The actual wavelength group may be the same or different, but logically independent)
5. Connector type:
The fiber end uses standard **dual-fiber LC connectors. Two LC dual-fiber jumpers (i.e., 4 fibers) are required to connect to the module.
6. Main advantages and application scenarios:
Port density doubles: Achieving two independent 100G uplink or interconnection links on a QSFP-DD physical port of a switch or router, significantly improving port utilization and rack density. This is its core value.
Long-distance connection: 10KM distance meets the requirements of campus networks, data center interconnection, and metropolitan area access scenarios.
Cost and space savings: Compared to using two separate QSFP28 100G modules, it occupies less space on the device panel and can save one host port.
High bandwidth: Provides a total bandwidth of 2x100G.
Simplified wiring: Physically connected from one port, the wiring is relatively centralized (but still requires 4 optical fibers).
Low latency: The optical fiber transmission itself has low latency characteristics.
7. Power consumption:
The typical power consumption of QSFP-DD modules is higher than that of QSFP28. The maximum power consumption of ,
QDD-2x100-LR4-S is usually within the range of < 5.0 watts (the specific value needs to be checked in the latest data sheet), thanks to the efficient laser and circuit design.
8. Compatibility:
Designed to support QSFP-DD ports. Cisco switches and routers (such as the Nexus 9000 series, 8000 series, etc., specific models that support QSFP-DD)
are available. Be sure to confirm the support of the target device in Cisco's official compatibility tools.
Electrical and protocol compatibility: It must be inserted into a port that supports the QSFP-DD specification and split mode (Breakout Mode), and this port needs to be configured to support 2x100G splitting.
