Product Detailed Description
This is a 100GBase-SR4 optical module in the QSFP28 package format. Here are its key features:
1. Package Format (Form Factor): QSFP28
This is an appearance size standard specifically designed for 100G rates, slightly larger than the QSFP+ used for 40G.
It is backward compatible with QSFP+ ports (usually achieved through breakout cables).
2. Rate and Protocol: 100 Gigabit Ethernet, with a transmission rate up to 100 Gbps. Follows the IEEE 802.3bm standard.
3. Interface and Wavelength Division Multiplexing Technology: SR4
SR stands for Short Reach, meaning short-distance transmission.
4 represents it uses 4 independent transmission channels and 4 independent reception channels.
It uses wavelength division multiplexing (CWDM) technology on multimode fiber (MMF),
The center wavelengths of the 4 channels are all around 850nm (approximately 850nm, 880nm, 910nm, 940nm),
Each channel transmits at a rate of 25Gbps, achieving a total bandwidth of 100G through parallel multiplexing.
4. Fiber Type: Multimode Fiber (MMF)
It must be used with OM3 or OM4 specification multimode fiber. OM5 fiber is also compatible.
5. Connector Type: MPO/MTP-12/APC or MPO/MTP-12/UPC
One end of the module is an MPO/MTP-12 (12-core) male or female connector (usually male).
This connector can accommodate 12 fibers, with 8 for transmission (4 for sending and 4 for receiving), and the other 4 are idle.
Note: The SR4 module usually uses UPC (blue connector) to polish the end face,
However, in some extremely demanding scenarios (such as data centers), APC (green connector) may be recommended to reduce crosstalk,
but the standard is UPC. Please choose according to the equipment manufacturer's recommendation.
6. Maximum Transmission Distance:
Using OM3 multimode fiber: up to 70 meters, using OM4 multimode fiber: up to 100 meters
Using OM5 broadband multimode fiber: also supports up to 100 meters or more (following OM4 standards).
7. Power Consumption: Typical power consumption is usually below 3.5W, making it a low-power 100G solution.
8. Digital Diagnostic Monitoring (DDM/DOM):
Supported. You can monitor the real-time parameters of the optical module through the command line interface of Juniper devices, such as:
Transmitting optical power, receiving optical power, temperature, supply voltage, laser bias current, which is crucial for network operation, fault diagnosis, and predictive maintenance.
9. Compatibility:
This is a Juniper officially certified module, with built-in Juniper firmware, ensuring perfect compatibility with Juniper switches,
routers (such as QFX series, EX series, PTX series, MX series devices with QSFP28 ports), and avoiding any compatibility warnings or errors.
Important Note: Juniper devices (as well as Cisco, Arista, etc.) usually have compatibility lock for non-original optical modules.
Using third-party modules may require command-line unlocking, and there are risks of stability and technical support. JNP-QSFP-100G-SR4 is the official safe choice for use.
Usage Scenarios
This optical module is mainly used for extremely short-distance, high-density, and high-speed interconnection within data centers and enterprise campus networks.
Specific scenarios include: 1. Interconnection of Spine-Leaf architecture in data centers:
This is the primary usage scenario. It is used to connect Leaf (access) switches and Spine (core) switches.
In the Spine-Leaf architecture, it is required that all Leaf switches have ultra-low latency and high bandwidth connections to all Spine switches.
100G SR4 is an ideal choice to achieve this goal, especially within a rack row or between adjacent rack rows.
2. Switch stacking or high-speed interconnection:
Used to interconnect multiple core or aggregation switches through 100G ports to form a high-performance switching cluster.
3. Connecting high-performance computing (HPC) clusters:
In HPC environments requiring extremely high data throughput, connect computing nodes and storage nodes.
4. Interconnection of devices within data centers (DCI):
Used to connect high-performance servers (equipped with 100G network cards) or storage devices in different cabinets within the same data center building or rack row.
5. Breakout applications (important and common):
One key advantage of the QSFP28 SR4 module is the support for Breakout function.
You can use an MPO-to-4xLC duplex breakout branch optical fiber jumper to split a 100G SR4 port into 4 independent 25G SFP28 ports.
Usage scenario: For example, a Leaf switch with 36 QSFP28 ports,
Theoretically, it can provide 36 x 4 = 144 25G ports through the Breakout method, for connecting a large number of servers, significantly increasing port density and flexibility, while reducing the cost per port.
